Forster Pechstein Spatlese Trocken GG
WINE: It is the black basalt, the mineral legacy of the Pechsteinkopf that gives the wine growing here a completely unmistakeable touch. The aroma and flavour of the Pechstein from the 2009 vintage is, as is often the case, squaring the sensory circle: beginning with fruity, subtle, exotic, yellow aromas, superseded by a closed, dense character with that typical mineral saltiness, which finds its perfection in a long, youthful, fresh, lasting elegance.
SOIL: A one time active volcano, in primeval times the Pechsteinkopf above Forst, dispersed large quantities of volcanic rock. In the bedrock of the Pechstein site there are therefore several strands of basalt, spreading throughout the end of the valley like a fan.
Loose basalt scree can be found on the surface of the site. The Pechstein also has red variegated sandstone weathered soils and sandy loam. Down approx. 2 m depth, you will find, as in many sites in Forst, layers of clay and limestone. The amount of clay and loam in the Pechstein means that the soil has a high water-holding capacity and this leads to a high level of mineralisation and perfect water supply during the vegetation period. Excellent physiological ripeness is the result.
HARVEST: 20.10.2009
YIELD: 30 hl/ha
FINISHING: Carefully finished, sedimentation overnight in stainless steel tanks and then fermentation and storage on the primary yeast in large wooden casks. First and one-off racking was at the end of April and filling was done at the start of July.
CAN BE STORED: 15 – 20 years potential
RECOMMENDED DISHES: The Pechstein loves saltiness. Long matured hard cheese, all types of shellfish and crustaceans, and game fish, prepared simply and yet full of aroma.
RECOMMENDED TEMPERATURE: 10 to 11°C
